But an equally important design requirement is this – how do you keep the mechanism closed when not in use? In industry, doors which swing open of their own accord, panels on equipment and machinery which move when you don’t want them to, storage units that won’t stay shut, all pose significant safety and security risks.

Catch vs Latch

A latch is a holding mechanism which makes use of a clasp or hasp, a movable component which, when closed, hooks onto a fastening on the cabinet or frame to hold a door, lid or drawer closed. A latch will therefore also include some means of releasing the clasp, such as a lever or a push button, which may also be used to shut the latch in place.

A catch, by contrast, uses a means other than a movable part to hold a panel in place when closed. Sugatsune, for example, has over the years come to specialise in magnetic catches in particular, setting the standard for industrial applications with an exhaustive selection of products. Other types of catch use forces such as friction to hold the mechanism in place until pull force is applied, without the need for a lever or a button.

Magnetic catches

With close to 100 separate items available, Sugatsune offers unrivalled choice in magnetic catch solutions for use across industry verticals. Ranging from heavy duty, ultra strong magnets capable of holding forces up to 150 N / 15kgf, all the way down to miniature catches designed for the lightest weight panels, our engineering expertise has established magnetic catches as a viable alternative to latches, with the benefits of simpler, more convenient installation and concealed mechanisms for an uncluttered contemporary finish.

Careful choice of materials is at the heart of our diligent design approach. Magnetic catches typically comprise a body, a case or cover, a counter plate (mounted to the body of the cabinet), the yoke (which holds the magnet) and the magnet itself. Most of our magnets are made from hard ferrite, although for greater adhesive force in heavy duty applications we also use neodymium. Most of our counter plates are stainless steel, which delivers the multiple benefits of being strong, corrosion resistant and attracted to magnets.

For the body and cover, we use a wide range of different materials and finishes to suit many different purposes, providing qualities such as heat resistance, anti-rust, antiseptic/antibacterial hygiene, ‘clean room’ dust prevention, noise reduction (minimising the ‘click’ when the catch is shut) and more. We are also market leaders in magnetic catches with a switch, which include a built-in circuit for turning the magnetic field on and off by way of opening and closing the door or drawer.

Non-magnetic catches

Aside from magnetic catches, we also supply a number of friction and tension-type catches. Plastic knuckle and rotary catches provide a simple, lightweight, easy-to-install solution perfect for small to medium-sized cabinet doors, while roller and stainless steel tension catches with spring-loaded ball bearings will hold heavier partition and cupboard doors.

Latches

Touch Latch

The way it feels in operation, a standard touch latch is very similar to a catch – there is no lever or button to press, no latch handle to operate. But instead of applying a pull force to break a magnetic or friction hold, touch latches are operated with a push, which triggers the release mechanism in the counter plate and allows the door to open. Sugatsune supplies non-magnetic and magnetic varieties of touch latch. A different variation is the push knob latch, where an external button is pressed to release the mechanism.

Lever Latch

We categorise lever latches as those that are operated by the opposite force to a touch latch, so a pull rather than a push. These include simple panel latches and snap locks, plus our stylish polished chrome flush slam latch – a type which activates automatically when a door is closed and is released when the inset lever is pulled forward.

Bars, Bolts and Hasps

This diverse category is defined by use of a horizontal latch mechanism. The archetypal examples are slide and barrel bolts which use a simple lateral movement of a bar into counter plate housing, but the category also includes bar latches and hasps which close in an arc to meet their counter plate.

Draw Latch

A draw latch is typically a vertical type of clasp used to secure a lid. They incorporate a dual mechanism in opening and closing – a strike which attaches to and detaches from a counter plate, and a lever which clamps the strike in position when closed and releases it to open. Many of our draw latches are spring mounted for extra tension and security.

Fasteners

We also manufacture quality fastener solutions for rapid, robust assembly. From panelling on aircraft and marine interiors to casings for industrial, laboratory and medical equipment, Sugatsune fasteners combine the convenience and flexibility of quick assembly and attachment with strong, reliable hold in all situations.

Push lock fasteners

Sugatsune’s push lock fastener series is a premium concept developed specifically for industrial equipment and interior panelling. Comprising a plug and socket system, the plug locks firmly into the socket with the press of a button, holding the panel securely in place. For detachment and disassembly, you simply press the button again to release. A locked cam system prevents any risk of the mechanism being loosened by vibration.

We manufacture push lock fasteners in metal and resin versions with high quality polished finishes for a quality appearance, with flush types available where the button does not protrude from the casing at all when activated.

Knob fasteners

Knob-type fasteners are the standard solution for assembly of switch boards, distribution boards, control boards and so on. We supply screw and snap-in varieties, with plugs made from hard-wearing steel or stainless steel and a choice of materials and finishes for the knobs.

Latches

Several of our latch types, including our flush slam latch and quick release lever latches (see Latches) can also be deployed on machinery casing and panelling to allow for convenient detachment, for example to allow access for maintenance.

Aluminium frame corner connectors

Part of our AS Series, our PJ range of corner connectors provide quick and simple fastenings for aluminium frames. With no nut or pre-positioning required, our PJ connectors are available for single and double groove frames with just a single screw per groove required. They can be used virtually anywhere an aluminium frame is needed and provide a clean, tidy appearance.

Door dampers use a catch mechanism for a purpose other than holding a door closed – they control the motion of a closing door to bring it to a smooth, gentle stop. Part of our soft close motion technology, we offer three types of product in this category:

Door dampers

Our LDD damper range is a market leading solution for premium close control. Rather than using a stay which maintains connection between door and frame at all times, our LDD dampers catch a closing door late in its arc, bringing it to a fluid, graceful finish. LDD dampers are available in hidden and surface mounted types and can be paired with our premium HES concealed hinge range. They are suitable for heavyweight industrial doors weighing up to 100kg.

Damper catch

Our DC damper range is designed for use on small to medium-sized cabinets, with varieties for glass and timber doors available.

Soft-close stay

Our YMC stay includes a damper as well as a hold mechanism and is designed for small cabinets (e.g. mailboxes) with doors weighing up to 0.7kg.
