DRAWER SLIDES
Motion is a Sugatsune speciality. We design and build the components that make drawers, doors, lids, flaps and more work flawlessly. We do this with an uncompromising focus on reliability, resilience and build quality.
Drawing on our peerless expertise in developing robust linear motion mechanisms for industrial applications, our drawer slide range prioritises durability. In place of the most basic tongue-and-groove runner solutions for drawers, we manufacture aluminium and stainless steel slides precision engineered to provide the smoothest running for the longest possible time.
Drawers offer an alternative storage solution to cabinets enclosed by doors or lids. Instead of having a removable front panel, drawers involve moving an entire container in and out of a unit. Drawers are well suited to storing smaller items and provide better access than, say, a series of static shelves within a cabinet, particularly if the unit is relatively deep.
Many chests of drawers are built with only a basic runner system to allow this linear movement in and out – typically a groove in the side panel of the drawer that sits and slides along a plastic or wooden track in the cabinet wall. But as, compared to hinges, the distances these mobile parts move is much greater, they are also prone to greater wear and tear.
Once runners start to snag or run off line, damage to the rest of the drawer soon follows.
A key advantage of a dedicated slide mechanism is that it takes the force and friction of opening and closing off the drawer and cabinet themselves, reducing wear and tear. But it also means we can build other functions into the slides to add value – locks, catches, bumpers, hold open and hold closed mechanisms, silent and soft close, push-to-open.
Slide extension
Sugatsune supplies slides that move either full or 3/4 extension. Full extension slides provide maximum access to drawer interiors by allowing the full body to be pulled clear of the cabinet. They are made up of three rails or ‘members’ which slot into one another in series. Although full extension adds extra load to the members, this range includes our most heavy duty slides, with stainless steel products capable of bearing up to 272kgf.
By contrast, 3/4 slides do not extend all the way out of the cabinet. They feature two members rather than three, which means there is less of a load placed on the slides, potentially improving longevity.
- Silent & Soft Close: Building on our expertise in damper technology for doors, flaps and lids, we have also developed a smooth, controlled closing mechanism for drawers. Our soft close slides not only cut all metal-on-metal noise and prevent slamming, they also act to provide a ‘self close’ feel, picking up minimal push force and returning the drawer to a closed position in an elegant fashion.
- Push-to-Open: Our push-to-open slides include a catch mechanism which holds the drawer closed until a gentle push is applied. This means there is no need for handles or pulls on the outside of the drawer, giving designers the freedom to experiment with sleek, modern looks.
- Hold Closed: This uses a detent (ball bearing) mechanism to hold a drawer in the closed position until a pull force is applied to open it. The inclusion of this function in the slide means there is no need for an extra latch.
- Hold Open / Lock: We offer two ways to hold drawers in a fully open position. Like Hold Closed, Hold Open uses a detent to keep a drawer open until a push force is applied to close it. Lock uses a catch mechanism which has to be released by a lever.
- Friction: Again using ball bearings, a friction mechanism allows a drawer to be temporarily held in any open position along the course of the slide.
